Chairman Schiff Statement on Treasury Sanctions on Andrii Derkach
Washington,
September 10, 2020
Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, released the following statement: “Today’s announcement by the Treasury Department that it has sanctioned Andrii Derkach, identified as a Russian agent for the last ten years, is appropriate and welcome. It follows an August 7 public statement by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence confirming that Derkach is spreading false narratives and claims on behalf of Russia meant to undermine former Vice President Joe Biden and advance the re-election campaign of Donald Trump. This is, of course, the same Kremlin agent who has been meeting and communicating with the President’s personal lawyer and peddling this false information to Congress “Remarkably, even as the Treasury Department acknowledges Derkach has been an active Russian agent with close connections to the Russian Intelligence Services, and identifies the narrative that he is promoting as ‘false and unsubstantiated,’ the President of the United States continues to push out the same false claims and smears. “Russia’s continued efforts to interfere in our election must be thwarted with every tool available to us. This announcement should serve as a reminder to those in the United States that have elevated Derkach’s disinformation and engaged with him and other foreign actors spreading similar false narratives, that their work only advances Vladimir Putin’s interests and efforts. Americans alone should decide American elections.” ### |
