Chairman Schiff Statement on Solar Winds Hack

Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, released the following statement:

“Cyber-attacks, particularly from malign state-sponsored actors in Russia, China and Iran have grown only more sophisticated as the hacking arms race accelerates, but their goals remain the same – to undermine the United States, our economy and national security, and to collect intelligence on millions of Americans.

“These latest cyber-attacks, which media reports attribute to Russia, could be particularly devastating, because the tools believed to be stolen and the network software reportedly compromised by threat actor malware are used by some of the world’s biggest companies and agencies. These intrusions reinforce the need to secure our unclassified government networks and those in the private sector that partner with the government. This has been a persistent problem, and we’ve seen devastating attacks ramp up in recent years, with hacks targeting the Office of Personnel Management and State Department, and now Departments of Treasury and Commerce.

“The next Administration must make hardening our networks – both public and private infrastructure – a major priority and make it clear there will be consequences for those responsible.  For too long, cyber-attacks have been seen as relatively cost-free for the perpetrators; that needs to change.”
