Chairman Schiff Statement on FBI, CISA, ODNI, and NSA Announcement Linking SolarWinds Hack to Russia
Washington,
January 5, 2021
Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, released the following statement after the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), and the National Security Agency (NSA) released a joint statement attributing the SolarWinds hack to Russia: “Today, the United States Government attributed the most recent cyber-infiltration of our nation’s government and private sector as Russian in origin, and suggested that it was part of an ongoing intelligence operation. Russia has long been an aggressive and malign actor in cyberspace, and this operation demonstrates their continued determination and capability to attack our networks and undermine our national security, just as they attacked our democracy in 2016. “It’s clear from the scale of this compromise that we have a lot of work to do to harden our defenses, shore up the government’s cybersecurity practices, improve the quality of intelligence collection on cyber threat actors, and increase cooperation, both within government and with the private sector to identify, fix and defend against these threats. “There is likely much more to learn, and this is only the beginning of this necessary work. Congress will need to conduct a comprehensive review of the circumstances leading to this compromise, assess the deficiencies in our defenses, take stock of the sufficiency of our response in order to prevent this from happening again, and ensure that we respond appropriately.” ### |
