                        Ruppersberger Statement on the Retirement
of CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell

Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD), Ranking Member on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, released the following statement on the announcement of CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell’s retirement.

I want to offer my best wishes to Deputy Director Michael Morell as he concludes his 33-year career and departs CIA. Since the 9/11 attacks, Mr. Morell has played a critical role in every major national security incident involving the U.S. and CIA. While there have been a number of Directors during this period, Mr. Morell has been the Agency’s constant, authoritative voice for the Committee. He has twice served with distinction as Acting Director of CIA. His long commitment to public service is to be honored.

Mr. Morell has appeared before the Intelligence Committee a number of times and each time, his testimony has been thorough and forthright. We could always depend on Michael to give an honest assessment of any situation. I appreciate his dedication to informing the Committee in such an effective way, which has benefitted the Committee Members, Congress, and our country’s national security.

Although Mr. Morell is moving on, a commendable legacy trails behind him and transcends beyond the Agency walls. His service to the country is appreciated and will not be forgotten.  He will be greatly missed.
