Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA), Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, issued the following statement:

“Reports of a new spear phishing attack, allegedly by the same Russian actors who carried out the SolarWinds hack, demonstrate our adversaries’ sophistication and determination to penetrate our networks. If Moscow is responsible, this brazen act of utilizing emails associated with the U.S. government demonstrates that Russia remains undeterred despite sanctions following the SolarWinds attack. Those sanctions gave the administration flexibility to tighten the economic screws further if necessary — it now appears necessary.

“The Intelligence Committee will pursue more information on this incident, but it’s clear we must improve our prevention and deterrence against adversarial intrusions into our networks, including new sanctions or other punitive actions.”
