Chairman Schiff Statement on Department of Justice Recovery of Colonial Pipeline Ransom

Washington, D.C. – Today, Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, issued the following statement on the Department of Justice announcement it seized millions in ransom dollars paid to the criminal group DarkSide following the Colonial Pipeline attack last month:

“The operation to seize more than $2 million in Bitcoin from the cybercriminals who conducted the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack is a significant success, sending a message to these criminal actors that we can and will impose consequences on them - despite their efforts to remain untraceable and anonymous.

“It’s critical that the Biden administration use a strong approach in going after the groups that conduct these attacks, given the harsh consequences ransomware and cyberattacks have on our national security and our economy. We should use our technological means to disrupt these attacks, and continue to go after the ill-gotten gains of the perpetrators. We will also need to take further steps to strengthen our defenses, and respond to nations like Russia that serve as home to these criminal organizations.”
