Schiff Statement on Summit Between Presidents Biden and Putin

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, issued the following statement ahead of the Wednesday summit between Presidents Biden and Putin:

“When President Biden meets with Putin, I’m confident that he will set a new tone for our country’s relationship with Russia — a strong, forceful America, standing with our allies, that won’t turn a blind eye to Putin’s authoritarianism, abuse of human rights, and destabilizing activities.

“The policy of the last president to placate and appease Putin undermined our national interests, damaged international institutions and alliances, emboldened the Kremlin to interfere in our elections, and allowed cybercriminals to operate with impunity within Russia’s borders. This summit will hopefully mark a new chapter in our relationship with Russia - one consistent with our values and interests.

“President Biden’s agenda is long, and I’m confident he will press Putin to answer for Russia’s many transgressions, including demanding accountability against cybercriminals who target U.S. infrastructure and economy, deterring further Russian meddling in our elections, supporting press freedoms within Russia, and addressing the Kremlin’s aggression toward Ukraine. But I’m also confident he can chart a path forward on issues of shared concern, like nuclear nonproliferation. I stand ready to work with the administration on these critical issues.”
