Washington, D.C. – Today Congressman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, issued the following statement:

“Protecting our service members must always be our top priority, and the military strikes conducted yesterday along the border of Iraq and Syria were intended to deter and prevent additional attacks by Iran-backed militias.

“Based on what I have learned so far, I believe these were an appropriate and reasonable use of force intended for defensive purposes. The Intelligence Committee will closely review the basis for this strike, including an assessment of whether this action will truly deter or prevent further attacks by these militias using UAVs and other means. The committee has requested a briefing from the Department of Defense on the strikes.”
