Chairman Schiff Statement on White House Action to Combat Cyber Threats
Washington,
July 28, 2021
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, issued the following statement: “The newly announced White House action to combat cyber-attacks against our critical infrastructure is essential to addressing the rising threat to systems our country counts on every day – from water supplies and the electrical grid, to transportation systems and pipelines. “These threats emanate not only from foreign nations, but as we have seen recently, they also stem from cyber-criminals who launch ransomware attacks in an effort to extort payment and cripple companies. Simply put, the time has come to place a greater onus on the owners and operators of critical infrastructure to meet higher cybersecurity standards, because the impact of a failure can be felt throughout our economy and imperil public safety. “This executive action by President Biden is an important step, but I believe Congress must look beyond voluntary standards to strengthen our defenses.” ### |
