Washington DC — Representative Jim Himes, Ranking Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, today issued the following statement regarding the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny:

“Alexei Navalny was imprisoned and died in captivity because he refused to give up on a vision of a free and democratic Russia. He could have lived in exile but chose to return to Russia because he knew courage is exactly what Putin fears the most. Navalny’s sacrifice should steel the spines of all who struggle for freedom under the yoke of authoritarianism, including our allies in Ukraine who urgently need our support.”
