Himes Statement on Anomalous Health Incidents
Washington,
December 5, 2024
WASHINGTON, DC—Today, Ranking Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Jim Himes released the following statement: “The U.S. government’s immense efforts to determine a cause for Anomalous Health Incidents (AHIs) has been frustratingly inconclusive. However, the Majority CIA Subcommittee’s Interim Report has uncovered no new evidence to support the conclusion of adversary involvement or evidence of improper analytic process. What’s more, I have served on the House Intelligence Committee throughout this period and across three Administrations, and I have seen no evidence that the U.S. government was not determined to find the root cause of these incidents and to protect the men and women who go to work around the world every day to safeguard our nation. Nor have I observed the IC do anything to impede the subcommittee’s investigation. “While bipartisan staff participated in the investigation, with respect to the interim report, the Majority lacked the conviction to allow it to be read by the Minority Staff or others with the same access to information as they had. “The sloppiness of this interim report does not mean that the critical issue of AHIs can be put to bed. Congress has appropriately mandated that the IC remain focused on collecting new information and analyzing it on a regular basis. Additionally, Congress has provided the IC and other agencies new authorities to compensate and care for those who have experienced AHIs. That effort has been a bipartisan priority, and one we have worked on closely with the IC’s leadership, most significantly Director Burns, to implement. Our commitment to the health and wellbeing of the men and women of the IC is absolute.” |
