Himes Statement on Third Anniversary of Russian Invasion of Ukraine
Washington,
February 24, 2025
Washington, DC — Today, Representative Jim Himes (CT-04), Ranking Member on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, released the following statement: “In the three years since Russia launched its illegal and brutal invasion, our friends and allies in Ukraine have stood strong with the support of the United States and the free world. At every turn, they have defied the grim predictions of their imminent defeat and occupation, exacting a massive cost on the Russian military and state. They have fought with a courage and patriotism that is sadly foreign to Donald Trump, who now seems determined to cast his lot with authoritarians and aggressors. “To abandon Ukraine now would betray our founding principles and signal to the world that the United States is no longer fit to serve as the world’s foremost steward of freedom and democracy. We can and should work towards an end to this war, but that end must include an honorable peace that guarantees Ukraine’s security and sends a clear message that the global community will not tolerate the changing of borders through armed aggression. I continue to call on my Republican colleagues to serve as a counterweight to Trump’s calamitous behavior. That is why Congress exists, and history will look harshly upon those who avert their eyes, because rest assured, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping are watching us closely.”
