Himes, Meeks, Smith Oppose U.S. Military Force Against Iran, Urge Continued Diplomacy
Washington,
February 20, 2026
Washington, DC -- U.S. Representatives Jim Himes, Ranking Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence; Gregory W. Meeks, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee; and Adam Smith, Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement opposing U.S. use of military force against Iran and urging President Trump to continue engaging with Tehran diplomatically: “Diplomacy is the most effective tool available to durably constrain Iran’s nuclear program and reduce the risk of a broader regional war. Renewed talks with Tehran show that a diplomatic path remains open, which President Trump should not abandon for a short-term, unauthorized show of military force that leaves Americans less secure. “The Constitution is clear: decisions to go to war require Congressional authorization. If the President believes military action is necessary, he must come to Congress and make the case that it is in the national security interest of the United States to do so.” |
