Schiff Statement on Reports from the Korean Peninsula

Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the Ranking Member of the House Intelligence Committee, released the following statement:

“Word that the North Korean dictator, Kim Jong Un, may be ready to begin denuclearization talks with the United States is positive, even if we must view it with the necessary skepticism borne of such talks in the past. On multiple occasions, Pyongyang has seemingly opted for the path of negotiation, only to reverse course after pocketing concessions from Seoul or the international community.

“Given this track record, and the conviction among many North Korea experts that Kim will never relinquish his nuclear arsenal or his missiles, any negotiations with the Kim regime are likely to be difficult and prolonged.  Nevertheless, the Administration should pursue a diplomatic resolution with vigor in order to ascertain whether Kim is serious, or whether Pyongyang is merely seeking to divide Washington and Seoul by dangling the prospect of a true thaw on the Korean Peninsula.

“As Churchill once famously said, ‘to jaw-jaw is always better than to war-war.’”
