Schiff Statement on Announcement of Sanctions on Russian Oligarchs
Washington,
April 6, 2018
Los Angeles, CA – Today, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the Ranking Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, released the following statement: “Today’s Treasury Department announcement sanctioning seven close associates of Russian President Vladimir Putin and their businesses, and a number of other Russian government and state-owned entities, is the most significant action the Trump Administration has taken to date to see Russia punished for its interference in our election, its murder of dissidents at home and abroad, and its subversion of democracy and peace from Syria to Ukraine and beyond. “The sanctioning of oligarchs like Oleg Deripaska, who is linked to Paul Manafort, Alexander Torshin, and Putin’s son-in-law will send a strong message to the Kremlin. By isolating Putin’s regime and financially punishing his support base among the oligarchs, we may be able to induce a change in Moscow’s behavior — if not, we will have to explore other options to pressure the Kremlin to chart a new direction. “Finally, while these actions are welcome and long overdue, they would be stronger if accompanied by a clear statement from the President himself that the United States recognizes Russia’s attack on our democracy and its destabilizing behavior, and that we are determined to impose severe consequences for these actions and any others in the future.” ###
