Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the Ranking Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, released the following statement:
“Facebook’s announcement that it uncovered and removed a significant network of Iranian accounts and pages engaged in a foreign influence campaign demonstrates that the techniques honed by the Internet Research Agency in St. Petersburg can and will be used by other hostile powers. Twitter’s decision to likewise remove Iranian-linked accounts that engaged in coordinated manipulation further underscores that foreign influence activities continue to span different social media platforms.
“It will take a bipartisan and whole of government approach to combat these foreign influence campaigns designed to divide us, as well as the continued efforts of the technology firms.
“Ultimately, this is not an issue of party, and both Democrats and Republicans can count on being the target of foreign hackers and cyber influence campaigns. We will continue to work with the Intelligence community and technology platforms to make sure all efforts are made to protect the integrity of our democratic institutions.”
